Search engine marketing needs to be a holistic approach. Some people that I speak to think that paid search marketing is better than Organic Search marketing, others feel the opposite. I would say I am right down the middle, you need both, equally. Examples of Paid and Organic search:

With paid search being a quick turn around (you can be up in hours) you can test and trial keywords, quantity of traffic or conversions and pass that data to your organic team, where results can take 6 months. On the reverse, organic search will find the hidden gem long tail keyword that would have been impossible to create yourself.
To do both of these campaigns effectively, you need a well-built analytics campaign and you need to look and take decisive action weekly. If you don’t want to learn how to do this, it would be a lot cheaper hiring a company to do this for you. The ROI loss would far outweigh that of a couple thousand dollars a month to hire someone to take care of it for you.
